09 Income

Awards, Prizes and Cash Gifts

AUTHORITY
Income Support, Training and Health Benefits Regulation, Schedule 2, sections 1(1)(p), 1(1)(q) and 1(2).

POLICY
When determining program eligibility and the monthly benefit amount, the following resources are considered partially exempt:

    • An award or prize received by a member of the household unit for outstanding academic or community achievement to a maximum of $3,500 per member per academic year.

      Note:
      Where the amount of the award or prize is more than $3,500 and is determined to be received to cover for more than one academic year, the amount may be allocated over the number of years for which the prize or award was given.

    • Cash gifts of a non-recurring nature from anyone to a maximum of $900 each calendar year per each member of the household unit.

      Note:
      In some circumstances, substantiation may be required to validate the nature of the resource provided to applicants or recipients.
