Essential Diabetic Supplies

AUTHORITY

Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped Act, section 3
Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped General Regulation, section 7

INTENT

To provide basic coverage for diabetic supplies to eligible clients, cohabiting partners and dependent children to ensure their health and well-being.

POLICY

AISH covers diabetic supplies purchased from any Alberta pharmacy through the AISH Health Benefits Card. The following diabetic supplies are covered for diabetics:

  • Blood glucose strips;
  • Lancets and penlets;
  • Blood monitoring devices, must be authorized by a physician and is limited to a one-time benefit not to exceed $70; and
  • Glucose calibration solution when required to monitor accuracy of monitoring device.


The following diabetic supplies are covered for diabetic clients using insulin:

  • Injection supplies, including needles, syringes, needles for insulin pens; and
  • Blood glucose test strips.


If diabetic supplies are not covered, the client may request a review through AISH.

Travel Outside of Alberta

Diabetic supplies are not provided outside of Alberta, and any costs incurred while traveling or vacationing outside of Alberta are not covered. Prior to leaving the province, the client should contact their AISH worker to discuss available options.
