Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities Amendment Act: Qs and As

Show Answer Why is government introducing this bill?

The Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities Act was enacted in 1988, and has not been amended since that time. That’s why this legislation is being updated to reflect current issues, relationships and roles within government and the community. The amendments will give the Council a more strategic, influential role in government policy and program development.

Show Answer What feedback did Human Services consider to create this bill?

The amendments are based on conversations with community and government stakeholders. A 2010/11 review of the Premier’s Council included input from stakeholders and current council members.

Show Answer What will this bill change?

There are several significant new roles for Council under the amendments:

  • The Council may advise government on reviews and development of policies, programs and initiatives, and their implementation.
  • The Council may advise government on alignment between policies and strategies affecting persons with disabilities and the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
  • Council can provide input into the development of government departments’ business plans with respect to impacts on persons with disabilities.
  • In providing advice to the government, the Council can work to identify opportunities that support sustainability of services through innovation.
  • Council will also support the relationship between government and community service providers.

Show Answer Will this have any direct effect on front line services?

No. The Premier’s Council is an advisory body, and does not deliver any direct services to Albertans with disabilities.

Show Answer What role will the Premier’s Council have in influencing the current initiatives underway in disability services (e.g. Employment First)?

The Council has been a source of advice regarding several of these initiatives and will continue to offer their insights through an expanded role under this bill.
