Freedom to be creative and productive

Photograph of AlainaNew to the community, Alaina knew no one and had no supports. Being a mom to 5 children with limited work experience and no business background, she knew her career goal of being an entrepreneur would be difficult to achieve. Alaina also struggled with a reading/comprehension disability that made it difficult to advance in any job. However, with a passion for cake decorating and baking, Alaina decided she would make her dream job become a reality.

Alaina connected with Minerva Employment and Career Services and Community Futures - Entre-Corp to gain entrepreneurial skills and open “All In Flavour Alaina’s Cupcakery” business. She was provided with life coaching, and assistance to set up a business including: applying for a business license, health inspections, securing a business location and other employment supports through Minerva’s Work Together program. She also applied for the Disability Mentoring Program through Entre-Corp and was able to secure entrepreneurial and bookkeeping mentorship. Community Futures assisted with funding to open her business.

Pleased in reaching her goal and operating her new business, Alaina states, “I have more confidence and self-esteem going from unemployment to starting my own business.”
