Gabriel wanted a better life for himself and his family. When he came to Lokken, he had a Grade 8 education, a young child at home and was barely making ends meet while working at minimum wage jobs.

His career goal was to find work in Edmonton’s booming trades industry so he enrolled in Lokken’s Certified Industrial Personnel Program. Through this employment preparation program, he upgraded his academic skills, obtained his GED, passed the Trades Entrance Exam and was accepted into the Ironworkers Union.

Today, Gabriel is employed and is a first year apprentice making $25 an hour. In addition to the jobs skills he acquired, he says he learned a number of useful life skills.

“Safety training, job search techniques and money and budgeting are all transferable skills and I use them daily on the job site.” says Gabriel.

Lokken’s Preparation Program runs 20 weeks and includes integrated training such as academic upgrading, Career Path Management, Career Development and a five week work internship.
