Looking beyond a learning disability to achieve success

Photograph of GrantGrant had a tough time finding and keeping employment. He had a learning disability which impacted his confidence but his life has changed since being referred to Employ Abilities, a program funded by the Government of Alberta.

As part of his career plan, Grant received funding to attend the Transitional Vocational Program at Lakeland College. Once he completed this program, Employ Abilities helped Grant with find a career, look for a job, learn teamwork, customer service, budgeting and interview skills. This program, along with a six week job placement at JD Collision in Bonnyville, gave him his start.

Today, nearly three years later, Grant continues to work at JD Collision and full-time employment has changed his life.

He’s now able to go on vacation, has money to buy things he needs and Grant says he appreciates the help he had received and ongoing support from his employer and co-workers.

Grant plans to take auto body repair training at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
