Pursuing a new life and career in Canada

Photograph of JeanJean and her children moved from the Philippines to Canada as a landed permanent resident in 2012, joining her husband. Having worked as a dentist in her home Country, Jean was not sure what type of job she would be qualified to do, given her limited language skills and lack of exposure to Alberta’s job market.

After being in Canada for only 2 weeks, Jean met with a Career Counsellor at Minerva Employment and Career Services to obtain assistance with her job search. Through workshops and one-on-one support, Jean received career and job search assistance including coaching and interview techniques.

Soon after, Jean was able to secure two entry level positions and felt it was a good opportunity to learn the language and culture of her new country. She did not give up on her dream job and continued to pursue employment in the dental field. Her family decided to relocate to a larger community when Jean finally got her dream job as a dental assistant.

Jean said “Minerva gave me hope and did not let me give up.”
