"Clare and Christine were amazing
instructors. They did more than help
me find a job. They created an
atmosphere of friendship, in which
we could all help each other to achieve
our best. Their patience and kindness
with everyone in the class was inspiring."

Rita had been unemployed for three years. She ran a successful cleaning business, but health issues forced her to close it. Rita was looking for a new career in a less labour intensive job, but she was unsure of how to approach the job market. Rita decided to take part in the Integrated Training for Older Workers program at Ballad Consulting Group. When she began the program, she expressed an interest in bookkeeping and accounting. Her instructors were confident in her success as she was always ahead of the rest of her class when they were learning Microsoft Word and Excel. She even helped her fellow students when they didn’t understand a lesson. A work-experience opportunity with a local bookkeeping company came up and the instructors knew exactly who should get it. Rita was eager to work and learn and met with Dale, the owner, twice a week. Dale was impressed with how quickly she learned and by the end of the training session he said that he would take her on as a partner so he could start moving toward retirement. Since completing the program, Rita and Dale have started a new business together: Many Happy Returns Bookkeeping Services.

The Targeted Initiative for Older Workers training program is co-funded by the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta
