Focused on abilities

Photograph of ColinBorn with partial hearing and diagnosed as deaf since the age of two and a half, Colin succeeded in attaining a high-level of education in Early Childhood Education and employment as an Educational Assistant. Despite his qualifications to work with students who are deaf, deaf-blind and autistic, Colin struggled in finding work that matched his skills and abilities when his work contract ended in 2016.

In September 2016, Colin contacted Champions Career Centre. Staff completed a comprehensive service plan with him that included assessment, job search workshops and mock interviewing. Working with a career coach, Colin prepared a more effective resumé and covering letter. In January of this year, with full disclosure of his disability to an employer, he was offered a job as an Early Childhood Educator Assistant.

Colin says, “never give up, know who you are, know what you have to offer and ask for and take the help that is available.”
