When Ahmet arrived in Calgary with his young family from Syria over a year ago, he had very limited education and hardly any exposure to the English language. He did, however, want to get to work as soon as possible.

Ahmet was greeted at the Calgary International Airport by staff from the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) who helped Ahmet and his family settle into their new life in Alberta. When the conversation started to focus on employment, CCIS connected with Alberta Works staff to work with Ahmet and break down his barriers to employment. He attended Language Instruction for Newcomers and started working in the service industry to obtain Canadian work experience.

Having a background in orthotics, Ahmet quickly obtained a well-paying job at a local orthotics lab. Reading medical and technical forms, Ahmet’s developing English skills are essential in his position.

Curious about the Arabic statement above? Ahmet will happily translate, “language is the key to opening doors.”
