Success from humble beginnings

Photograph of SimonSimon arrived in Canada in 2010 as a refugee. He was an experienced electrician, but barely spoke a word of English and did not know anyone. Sharing a residence and taking English classes during the day, he moved from job to job with no secure direction.

In 2014, he saw an advertisement about the Electrician Upgrading program for experienced foreign trained electricians offered by the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) in partnership with SAIT.

The program provided Simon with essential skills and training and local work experience as an electrician. He completed the 24 weeks of training, was employed as an apprentice electrician and passed his Red Seal exam. He is now employed as a journeyman electrician.

“I could not have passed the Red Seal exam without this program. My quality of life is much better than before,” says Simon.
