Lack of confidence – a barrier of the past

Photograph of MayMay had 10 years of English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching experience in her home country of China before arriving in Canada, but could not get a job in her field due to an absence of local work experience. Feelings of isolation and lack of confidence became huge barriers.

In 2014, she walked into the Centre for Newcomers and plotted a new course of action. May received one-on-one career counselling, attended employment workshops and was connected to a network of ESL professionals, non-profit agencies and government offices. May says, “I learned about market demands and how to promote myself.”

In August 2015, following a tight recruitment competition, May was successful in getting a teaching related job as a classroom assistant in the Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC) program.
