Switching careers leads to happiness

Photograph of MinekoMineko was managing a quick-serve restaurant when she realized that she was mentally exhausted. Her role didn’t align with her skills or personality.

She had been looking for a new job for several months without success when she approached the Teamworks Career Centre for help.

The Career Coaches at Teamworks helped Minako with resumé and cover letter writing skills, helped her practice her interview skills, videoed her interviews to help her see that her accent was not a barrier, and increased her self-confidence as she practiced expressing herself and overcoming her shy demeanor and nervous feelings.

Mineko wanted to become an Office Administrator and so she completed Teamworks’ Accounting and Office Essentials program. She applied for 20 jobs, got one interview, and accepted an administrative position with RBC Dominion Securities.

She has been employed at RBC Dominion for nearly two years and has successfully taken a Canadian Securities Course. She anticipates that there are opportunities to advance within the organization.

“I enjoy my life more now. My quality of life is good. The job I now have fits more with my personality. Teamworks helped me grow. The Coaches helped me build my confidence by urging me to expand my network, and do informational interviews. I’m very grateful.”

Teamworks employment services are funded by Human Services’ Alberta Works program.
