Planning leads to exciting new career

Photograph of RonRon had a long and successful career in the financial services sector—working with the Canada Revenue Agency, SunLife, and other businesses.

But 2013 shook up his life. Ron lost his mother, his home was damaged by provincial flooding, his car was damaged by hail, and he lost his job. These hardships made Ron consider his lifestyle and take a serious look at the next phase of his career.

He had a wealth of experience, but Ron didn’t feel equipped to enter the job market. Feeling that his resume and cover letter were outdated, and uncertain of what he wanted to do, Ron entered the Opening Doors program in September 2013.

Ron’s priorities included finding a good job fit and increasing his readiness so that he could seize the right opportunity. The program helped Ron identify his strengths, which opened up new career opportunities. Informational interviews helped Ron to focus on what he was seeking in a job and learn how to market himself better to prospective employers.

Once he felt ready and confident, Ron utilized his network and contacts made at Job Fairs and through informational interviews to find his dream job as a District Manager with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

“Everything in my life prepared me for this job. I have never made more money in my life and my job fits my lifestyle.”

The Opening Doors program is funded by Human Services’ Alberta Works program.
