New career, new home

Photograph of LillianLilian was unemployed and approached JobLinks Employment Centre in August 2015 for help finding a job. Lilian was nervous about finding a new job. She hadn’t worked since 2013 due to her limited mobility linked to arthritis.

However, weekly appointments with her Employment Specialist helped build up her confidence and job-search skills. She practiced her job interview skills and then started applying for jobs online. She quickly found a job as a Sales Associate with a large retail store, but stayed in touch with her Employment Specialist for ongoing support.

Lillian has been working now for more than six months. She says that she enjoys her job and that her manager has been very accommodating.

“I was shocked. I didn’t think I would find a job so fast. Tessa, my Employment Specialist, helped me talk to my employer and request shorter shifts at the beginning, because they were just too much for me. I wasn’t sure if I should mention my disability or not—Tessa helped me have that hard conversation. Having an income is helpful—it has allowed me to move into the city from the country.”

The JobLinks Employment Centre is funded by Human Services’ Alberta Works program.
