Overcoming learning barriers and experiencing the fulfillment of work

Photograph of RileyRiley moved to the community of Slave Lake two years ago hoping to pursue his dream of working as a cleaner or a restaurant worker. Riley experienced barriers to employment, including some learning difficulties and no previous formal work experience.

Riley connected with the staff at the Slave Lake Alberta Works Centre. After helping him rework his resumé and practice job interviews, the Alberta Works team advocated for him in the community and found an employer who was eager to train Riley through the Alberta Works Workplace Training Program.

During the three-month Workplace Training Program, Riley spent three days a week learning the skill he needed to be successful at Alimo’s Pizzeria in Slave Lake. His manager says he is impressed with Riley’s punctuality, cheerful attitude, and dedication to learning and plans to continue Riley’s employment after the program ends. He also plans to increase the scope of Riley’s duties to include enhancing the restaurant’s website and helping out with summer ice cream operations.
