Trading up to a better career

Photograph of KarlaKarla was laid off last summer during a reorganization at the college where she had worked for more than 14 years. Karla found herself without a resumé in a competitive job market in the middle of an economic downturn. Karla decided that it was time to think about a career change.

She always enjoyed physical labour work, most often doing her own housing repairs and landscaping, and so she began focusing on how to get into a trade.

Karla visited her local Alberta Works Centre to work on her resumé and look for a job. During one of her visits, one of the staff suggested Karla attend a presentation about Women Building Futures—a pre-trades training program for women. Karla jumped at the opportunity and applied.

She worried that her age and lack of formal work experience as a labourer might be a barrier to her acceptance—more than 50 women were competing for only 12 spots in the program—but she perservered and was accepted.

“I’m so happy to be a part of this program and so looking forward to my future”.

Karla’s goal is to become indentured scaffolder.
