Graduation made a reality

Photograph of JonasJonas’ chances of graduating from high school were bleak. He had fallen behind in school and faced financial difficulties at the age of 16, due to a number of personal and family challenges.

“I often felt out of place at school. I was older than all of the kids in my grade because I had fallen behind.”

A family in the community took Jonas in, but the financial hardship took its toll.

An assessment with a Career & Employment Consultant along with support from Child and Family Services in Lac La Biche resulted in Jonas receiving Alberta Works Learner benefits. Jonas was able to pay for his own food and hockey expenses. He was also able to help friends with financial struggles.

With the help received from Alberta Works, Jonas graduated high school.

“Graduating made me feel like I accomplished something. It gave me confidence and showed me never to give up. If a person sets a goal, it can be achieved”.
