Finding support and job opportunities as a single mom

Photograph of AlandaAlanda moved to Alberta from New Brunswick with her four-month-old son and visited the Alberta Works Centre in Slave Lake seeking support.

Alberta Works staff provided Alanda with necessary supports and learned she was eager to return to work once her son was a bit older. Alana had a background and interest in working with children and staff assessed her as  a good candidate for the Workplace Training Program, where job seekers are paired with employers who provide on-the-job training.

A Career and Employment Consultant worked closely with Alanda to assess her existing skills and abilities and any areas she may require additional training or supports. Once all supports were in place, Alanda began her placement at a local daycare centre. She has been there for more than a month and her supervisor says Alanda has exceeded expectations.

Alanda said, “I was a single mom when I came to Alberta. I don’t know how I would have found a job and childcare for my son without the help of Alberta Works.”
