Bailey Mingo left Nova Scotia last fall and moved to Lac La Biche to build a brighter future for herself. She had worked as a cashier and cosmetician, but wanted to learn new skills that would open up new career possibilities in the trades or energy industry.

Lac La Biche Alberta Works Centre staff referred her to the Alberta Job Corps program to help her get the experience and training that she needed.

Bailey had to leave her makeup and dress clothes at home when she started working at Alberta Job Corps. She was handed a hard hat and steel toed boots and taught how to work safely using power tools and machinery.

After expressing her interest in journalism, Bailey’s Job Corps Counsellor arranged a work experience placement at the Lac La Biche Post. Bailey’s first story is about her experience moving to Alberta. Look for it in an upcoming issue of the Lac La Biche Post.

Bailey will complete her time at Alberta Job Corps by May and is already looking for a new job.

“If you are looking for an aspiring journalist who can fix a lawnmower, butcher a deer, and paint a trailer while wearing personal protective equipment and winged eyeliner, I’m your girl,” said Bailey.
