Getting back into the workforce

Photograph of FosterFoster had been out of the workforce for two years, due to health concerns, and he was having difficulty getting back into a warehouse job despite having a great deal of experience. He began to get discouraged and worried about making ends meet.

Foster applied to the employment preparation program at Alberta Job Corps and began earning a wage while he attended the program. He was assigned to the Habitat for Humanity Restore and gained new work experience providing customer service and keeping the store clean and organized.

While at Job Corps, Foster earned tickets in First Aid, Forklift Certification, Confined Spaces, Fall Protection, WHMIS and H2S Alive. He also had the opportunity to attend resumé, job-interview and job-search workshops. Foster says that he learned some valuable life lessons from the Alberta Job Corps workshops and support staff.

Foster proved to be a good fit with Restore and secured permanent full-time work. He describes his work as “working with good people for a good cause.”

Today, Foster has a greater sense of security and has just moved into a new apartment to be closer to the full-time job that he enjoys.
