Managing an office and a home

Photograph of JenniferJennifer, a single mother of three children, was receiving Alberta Works Income Support while she received cancer treatment. After being cleared, she wanted to further herself and find a career that would help support her family.

She had no work experience, very low self-esteem, and was still dealing with some medical issues when she first approached the McBride Bridges to Success program. She was initially very quiet and closed off, but as she became more involved in the program she quickly realized the importance of doing her best. Jennifer developed the ability to communicate, listen and speak effectively. She also learned how to identify her feelings, solve problems and developed her sense of self-worth.

Program staff recommended that Jennifer participate in a work experience placement in an office setting. Shortly after starting, her employer was so impressed with her work that they offered her a permanent position. Not long after being hired, Jennifer was offered a promotion to Office Manager. Jennifer now speaks to other Bridges to Success clients about how the program helped her along the way.

“McBride taught me that I have many skills. They showed me how to apply them and now I am a successful Office Manager,” said Jennifer.
