Motivates and inspires youth to prepare for post- secondary studies

Photograph of JoeyPursuing a post-secondary education was never the plan for Joey.

Joey, a First Nations Blackfoot member, began working in the construction industry while still in his early teens. He took on different jobs until he was 25 when some personal injuries forced to rethink his career path. His injuries limited the type of work he could still do and because he had never done apprenticeship training to obtain certification, Joey wasn’t able to find a foreman or supervisor position.

Joey set his sights on a post-secondary education and since that time, has gone on to achieve three diplomas from Lethbridge College’s Communication Arts Program: Print Journalism, Advertising/Public Relations and Broadcast Journalism. During his four years at Lethbridge College, he earned more than $20,000 in scholarship and bursaries while earning academic honours for three consecutive years.

Currently, Joey works as a Learning Clicks ambassador. Through this Government of Alberta program, Joey helps motivate and inspire youth to plan and prepare for post-secondary studies.

Joey’s future career goals include either working in government or pursuing a job in broadcasting, advertising or public relations.
