Velda

A career for the long haul

Photograph of VeldaVelda was having a hard time finding meaningful employment that paid a wage that would support her. Through the Forest Industry Off Highway Truck Driver Training program she was able to achieve her class 1 licence.

Real-time job experience hauling logs on off-highway roads provided the confidence to tackle other driving opportunities. Because of the training program Velda has since moved on to driving with Highway 21 Feedlot in southern Alberta.

Velda has become a role model for female drivers in an industry dominated by male drivers.

“I am thankful for not only the opportunity, but the encouragement of the participating Southwood Logging Co. that boldly stepped up to the plate to train and give me this chance. It was a big risk all around, and gave me belief in myself, talents and abilities,” said Velda. “If they can do it, I can too! Go for it, you’ve nothing to lose!”
