Learning essential skills in an innovative way

Photograph of PeterAfter being laid off and unemployed, Peter felt he had limited computer and job search skills. He lacked confidence and didn’t have a current resume.

In July 2013, Alberta Works connected Peter to the EMPACT program at Prospect Human Services.

EMPACT teaches essential and employability skills in a non-traditional manner, using a combination of experiential learning, traditional classroom instruction and practical work experience to reinforce lifelong skill development.

Peter enjoyed the outdoor experiences at EMPACT, which gave him a chance to concentrate on the skills he needed to learn. He gained experience with the computer, improved his resume and secured a job with a food company.

The job gave him a new-found confidence and optimism. According to Peter, “I can do anything and I feel like I’m contributing.”
