What We Do

In accordance with the Social Care Facilities Review Committee Act, the committee reviews the following facilities:

  • day care centres
  • out of school care centres
  • nursery schools
  • crisis nurseries
  • foster homes
  • group homes for children in crisis
  • secure treatment facilities for children and youth
  • contracted or government residential treatment centres for child and youth
  • safe houses to protect children involved in prostitution
  • treatment facilities for children involved in prostitution
  • youth shelters
  • treatment facilities for children with disabilities
  • long-term living institutions for children with disabilities
  • women’s emergency shelters

The Social Care Facilities Review Committee serves as a voice for service recipients. It ensures the views of recipients are heard and provides an ongoing mechanism for feedback.

During a visit, committee members meet with service recipients, their families or guardians and service providers. The committee members ask for their views about the facility’s services, particularly the quality of services offered and their satisfaction with those services. Committee members prepare a report on each facility summarizing this feedback. Individuals’ names and other personal information are kept confidential. The Minister of Human Services receives regular updates and recommendations from committee members.

The Social Care Facilities Review Committee’s Annual Report, which provides a provincial overview of its findings as well as a summary of its activities, is tabled in the Legislature.
