Adoption and Private Guardianship Orders Granted for Children in the Permanent Care of Human Services
Enduring relationships and stable placements, two key components of permanency, are fundamental to a child’s healthy development and ability to reach full potential. Two permanency options for children in permanent government care are adoption and private guardianship. The statistics included here show Adoption and Private Guardianship Orders granted for children who were in Permanent Care.

Licensed Agency Adoptions
Adoptions may be facilitated by any of the non-government, non-profit agencies that have been granted the authority to arrange private adoptions in Alberta. Birth parents may choose to place their child for adoption through a licensed adoption agency. These children do not have any legal status with the ministry.

Spousal/Step-Parent Adoptions
Adoptions of children by the spouse of the child’s biological parent are processed through the use of the Adoption Self-Help Kit available online or through the Queen’s Printer. Families may use the services of a lawyer or a private licensed adoption agency to assist them with completion of the adoption application and filing with the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Relative Adoptions (Children Not in Government Care)
Adoptions of children by extended family are processed through the use of the Adoption Self-Help Kit available online or through the Queen’s Printer. Families may use the services of a lawyer or a licensed adoption agency to assist them with completion of the adoption application and filing with the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Private Direct Placement Adoptions
Adoptions of children placed by guardians with adoptive families known to them and arranged between the two parties are processed through the use of the Adoption Self-Help Kit available online or through the Queen’s Printer. Families may use the services of a lawyer or a private licensed adoption agency to assist them with completion of the adoption application and filing with the Court of Queen’s Bench.

International Adoptions
Adoptions of children from other countries are managed by Adoption Services, Human Services and are completed with the involvement of licensed adoption agencies and adoption coordinators.
