Expected to Work (ETW)

Client Sub-Type 11 Self Employed

Characteristics
Clients who are self-employed, or a farmer, and engaged in developing a viable business. These clients must have an assessment completed by a CEC within 30 days of application to determine business viability. Note
Self-employed clients should be referred to one of the regional Economic Development offices for information about business plan development and funding resources. They should be provided with the Alberta Business Link Service Centre toll-free number (1‑800‑272‑9675) and the website link Business and Industry - Canada.ca.

Clients should only be assigned to this ETW sub-type for three months (or 12 months if they are a farmer). If they require IS beyond this period, a review of their circumstances is completed by a CEC including: a review of the client's assessment, their current business viability, their Individual Plan and the possibility of re-categorizing the individual to the appropriate client category. If they wish to pursue self-employment beyond this period, and refuse to actively seek full-time competitive employment, their IS file can be reviewed for non-compliance.

In addition to the expectations for all ETW clients, self-employed clients are also required to:

  • Keep accurate records of business expenses and income received.
  • Maximize earning potential (increase hours, seek additional work contracts).
  • Demonstrate progression towards viability.

Substantiation
The client provides proof of earnings.
