INTENT

Seniors, Community and Social Services provides supports to ensure the ongoing safety of victims of abuse. The Personal Benefit – Telephone and Transportation – Leaving Abusive Situation is provided to help them cover the costs of telephone and transportation in order to access the services they need to remain independent from their abuser.

POLICY

A monthly allowance to cover the costs of telephone and transportation is provided to an applicant or recipient when they or a member of the household unit is ending an abusive situation. The individual does not have to have moved in order to obtain this benefit.

The Personal Benefit – Telephone and Transportation – Leaving Abusive Situation allowance is issued to enable victims of abuse to access the services they need to secure their safety such as to call for emergency support and/or to arrange and attend appointments such as counseling or legal services. This allowance is issued for up to a period of six months with extensions provided as required.

Substantiation
Clients substantiate their need for this benefit by:

• Verbal statement of the client or worker’s knowledge of the abuse and
• Only if in doubt, evidence from a professional source (e.g. physician, nurse practitioner, police, women’s shelter)

• $35.00 per month

• $69.00 per month

PROCEDURE

The worker reviews the client circumstances and issues the benefit.
