Learner Income Support Benefits

Continuous Supplementary Benefits (General Policies)

Transportation to Day or Employment Programs

AUTHORITY

Income Support, Training and Health Benefits Regulation, Schedule 4, section 15
Full Time Learners:  Schedules 1, 2, 3 and 4 (Advanced Education)
Full Time Learners:  Schedules 1, 2, 3 and 4 (Labour and Immigration)

INTENT

Recipients of income support are expected to maximize their self-sufficiency through employment to the best of their ability. This benefit assists a learner by providing transportation benefits to enable a Barriers to Full Employment (BFE) spouse/partner to attend a day or employment program.

POLICY

The Government of Alberta may pay transportation costs for the spouse/partner of a learner who is:

  • designated BFE, and
  • is attending a day or employment program.


Rate

Actual cost based on the least cost alternative:

  • for public transit

     

    • allowance equal to the actual cost of a bus pass

     

  • if the person cannot use public transit

     

     

  • if the person cannot use public transit and does not have access to a private vehicle

     

    • actual cost of taxi fare
    • actual cost of ticket to use private bus companies (e.g. Red Arrow).
Note
This amount is in addition to rates issued under the Employment Training and Transition Supports.

PROCEDURE

The learner submits either a Learner Income Support Application (Full-Time Study) or a Change in Circumstances form requesting the benefit.
