Career and Employment Information Services Principles

“Alberta Works Because We Invest in People”

Key principles for the Alberta Works Career and Employment Information Services:

  • Improved outcomes for individuals

Services focus on assisting individuals to participate successfully in the workforce, and to have sustainable employment, to the greatest extent possible given the individual’s situation. The services ensure that individuals are better off working.

  • Services are based on what people need

A service plan captures the services provided to individuals based on an assessment of the person’s situation, and is responsive to their unique needs for the purpose in attaining work and participating in employment and training programs across Government of Alberta ministries, so they may reach their goal of self-reliance, where able.

  • Services encourage personal responsibility and active participation

Individuals receive support through a system of services towards employment as the route to independence. The services: help people move off Income Support into employment, stay off Income Support, or never enter the Income Support system.

  • Supports assist in Building Alberta’s workforce

Career and Employment Information Services assist individuals to obtain and maintain successful and sustainable employment, thus ensuring that employers are able to fill their jobs with qualified people.

  • Recognition of individual’s rights

Programs and Services recognize that individuals are honest, trustworthy, and accountable and respect their right to autonomy, dignity and personal choice.

There may be complex situations where various policies apply, or where policy is unclear, or where a variety of solutions are possible. A response to the situation that takes these principles into account is appropriate, even when other solutions are also possible.

  • Substantiation

Verification of individual’s information is primarily required in instances where it is necessary to ensure that the appropriate program or service is provided and that services are being administered correctly. Documentation beyond what is required should be requested only in individual situations, and should not become a general requirement.
