Employers

INTENT 

The Government of Alberta develops partnerships with employers to provide work experience and training to help build Alberta’s workforce.

Employers are selected based on their ability to provide work experience applicable to the field of training and/or skills training to meet the employment needs of the learner as identified in the Service Plan.

To strengthen relationships with employers, industry, organizations and community groups with common labour market needs; increased workforce partnerships are essential to enhance workplace human resource development and implement labour market adjustment strategies for these groups.

POLICY

Eligible Employers

Employers may be from for profit, non-profit or public sectors.

Requirements for Employers

All employers must:

  • not be in conflict or potential conflict with the Government of Alberta's mission, values and beliefs,
  • not be in contravention of any law or at risk of such contravention,
  • not displace workers or workers on lay-off and/or awaiting notice of recall, and
  • maintain individual information in strict confidence (see Disclosure of Information),
  • comply with the laws and regulations that apply to Alberta employers.


Employers who provide work experience as part of Skills Investment programs must:

  • have the ability, experience and capacity to provide work experience applicable to the field of training, and
  • provide input into the design of the work experience placement and
  • maintain records of attendance and progress, and if applicable employment records.


Employers who provide training must:

  • have the ability, experience and capacity to provide acceptable training and supervision,
  • have the staff that is skilled and committed to train according to the training plan,
  • maintain records of attendance and progress, and if applicable employment records
  • have appropriate Workers Compensation Board Coverage and current General Liability Insurance, in an amount not less than $2,000,000 inclusive per occurrence, and
  • have $1,000,000 vehicle insurance for all company vehicles, owned and un-owned, the trainee will be operating or riding in.


Expectations of Employers

Employers who provide work experience are expected to:

  • work closely with training providers in structuring the work experience component of the program,
  • provide work experience appropriate to training required by the learner,
  • assess the learner’s work experience against the competencies learned in training, and
  • consider hiring the learner upon completion of training.


Employers who provide training are expected to:

  • develop a training plan with the learner that addresses the skill gaps between the employer’s minimum job requirements and the learner’s skills and experience,
  • provide quality training as outlined in the training plan,
  • assess the success of the training in terms of the competencies acquired by the employee, and
  • continue the employment of the learner after completion of training.


PROCEDURE

Training providers and contracted service agencies develop a network of employers who will accept placements for work experience and/or training. The placement process by the training provider or contracted services staff includes:

  • assessment of the learner’s need for work experience and/or training,
  • matching the learner to an appropriate employer,
  • completing a work experience plan or training plan with the employer,
  • completing an agreement or contract if applicable, and
  • monitoring the learner’s progress and updating Mobius as needed.
