Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped General Regulation, sections 1(1)(c), 2.01(1)(e), 4(1),4(2)(c), 4(5) and 4(6)
INTENT
To ensure a continuation of AISH benefits for clients who are temporarily admitted to an institution or a residential addiction treatment facility.
POLICY
Institutions
Clients temporarily admitted to an institution may continue to receive AISH benefits for up to three months. This excludes clients entering correctional institutions, penitentiaries, or community residential facilities (halfway houses).
A modified living allowance may be provided when a client is admitted to an institution from a facility and the operator is holding the bed.
AISH benefits may continue to be provided up to an additional three months when a client:
- Is admitted to an institution and is maintaining a residence in the community; or
- Has a discharge plan in place for release within the extension period.
Clients residing in an institution after three or six months become ineligible for AISH until they are no longer in the institution.
Correctional Institutions, Penitentiaries and Community Residential Facilities
Clients admitted to correctional institutions, penitentiaries, or community residential facilities (halfway houses) are not eligible for AISH.
Exception:
AISH benefits may continue if a client is admitted to an Alberta Justice forensic assessment unit for a thirty-day assessment or is incarcerated for less than one month.
Residential Addiction Treatment Facilities (including Recovery Communities)
AISH applicants or clients and their cohabitating partner or dependent children receiving treatment in a residential addiction treatment facility are eligible to receive AISH benefits, including personal and health benefits, as long as all eligibility criteria for these benefits are met.
Re-establishing a Residence in the Community
AISH clients recently discharged from an institution or a residential addiction treatment facility may be eligible for the Establishing a New Residence benefit to help re-establish themselves in the community. This benefit is not available to clients who continued to receive AISH benefits while residing in these facilities.
